Lowering your cholesterol does not have to be a stress related endeavor. With the holidays around the corner, I can hear all the moans and groans of many that are ready to cry at the thought of the foods around the holidays they should stay far away from in order to keep their cholesterol levels in check. This does not have to be a huge problem. Just because you are on a low cholesterol diet, this does not mean you have to skip out on your favorite foods. You just have to watch the amount you eat and how much cholesterol or saturated fat the food has in order to stay within your recommended daily allowance.
Of course, you will hear all kinds of ideas of what the recommended daily allowance is according to the person you are listening to, however, most professionals state that for a 2000 calorie diet you should consume around 300 mg per day. Of course, this amount should be lowered if you are not on a 2000-calorie diet or if you are maintaining a low cholesterol diet then you should drop it down to 200 mg per day. This feat can be done and you can still enjoy some of your favorites.

For breakfast, be sure to skip all kinds of meat and of course eggs. Instead of the traditional breakfast that we know comes with high cholesterol, eat fruit and oatmeal. This way you have not used any of the recommended daily allowance of cholesterol so you can have more foods at the holiday dinner. The same goes for lunch. Choose foods that have no cholesterol at all such as a vegetable soup and a salad or or foods that lower cholesterol. If you need a snack before dinner, eat fruit or fresh vegetable.
Now, you still have 300mg of cholesterol you can consume for that holiday dinner. Here is what you can eat at your holiday dinner without the worry of going over that 300mg mark.
- 3 ounces of light meat turkey with 73mg of cholesterol.
- 2 tablespoons of turkey gravy with 1mg of cholesterol.
- 1/2 cup of whipped potatoes made with real butter and whole milk adding 12mg of cholesterol.
- ½ cup of stuffing made with bread adding 0mg of cholesterol.
- 2 tablespoons of cranberry sauce adding a trace amount of cholesterol.
- 1/8 piece of a 9 inch pumpkin pie with 65mg of cholesterol
Add this all up and you will see that you have only consumed 151mg of cholesterol. If you wish to eat dark meat instead of light, the cholesterol amount will be 99mg. This is also without the skin. If you enjoy the skin, then the amount is 81mg for light roasted turkey with skin and 99mg for dark roasted turkey with skin.
As long as you go by this guide, you can even enjoy going back and eating a second helping without any regrets.
